Journal Topic 2 -- French Lieutenant's Woman

A Portrait of Sarah: Tell us what you know about Sarah from the first 50 pages of the novel. What's she like? How does she behave? In what way does she seem mysterious? How do you visualize her? Does she remind you of other literary heroines?

Sarah, in my opinion, almost reminds me of Tess. Fowles describes her as having a bit of misfortune. She is a good judge of character, which for the most part, works to her disadvantage. She seems out of place whereever she goes, and her behavior doesn't conform to Victorian expectations. "Her father had forced her out of her own class, but could not raise her to the next one." (48)
